The biggest hide-and-seek of Finland needed game designer’s helping hand for their latest season, when the Suomipop radio host Tuukka Ritokoski decided to skip work and go hiding somewhere in Finland. The nation-wide man hunt happened over 24 hours and involved potentially thousands of listeners all over the country. During the hide-and-seek game, Ritokoski dropped cryptic hints of his location to his fellow radio hosts. These hints included puzzles hidden in printed newspapers, real-life hidden objects, wordplays and even a hint hidden in national tv. By following the path of clues, the listeners were able to narrow down Tuukka’s location, and eventually find him. The listener, who was able to hunt the host down first, won the reward of 1000 euros.
Designing a mixture of audio and real-life game for national-wide audience was a fun experience for me. Taking into account the potentially huge amount of players in different skill levels was a challenging feat to tackle even with my experience, but based on the feedback from the production team and social media, the game worked well and provided fun and entertainment for the listeners.
